Meet Zianna
Six-year-old Zianna is a gifted writer and artist who has been defying the odds since the day she was born. She came into the world by emergency C-section and experienced oxygen deprivation and seizures. She spent a couple of weeks in specialized care of CHEO’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Zianna’s brain injury resulted in some weakness on her left side, so the next stop was the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) to help her gain strength through physiotherapy. Then, at age three, Zianna began experiencing excruciating back pain. She was referred to CHEO’s Pain Management Clinic where through a combination of medication and coping tools, she is now thriving. Her mother can’t believe how far she’s come! Zianna is an exceptional child, taking an active role in planning her own care and activities, even learning piano to help strengthen her left hand.
